Getting Caught at the Cemetary By Cops
« on: January 28, 2006, 01:51:36 PM »
I was just wondering what the penalty would be and what the possibilities are if my friends and i were to get caught while walking through the woods and trying to get scared by ghosts and stuff like that

You would get charged with trespassing.
Get arrested, and have to pay a fine.

If you wish to visit during the daylight hours you will be fine. Visiting after sunset is what will get you in a bit of trouble.

If you happen to be harassed by police during the day I would like to hear about it. If you can also get their name and/or badge number that would be helpful for me as well. You don't even have to ask for that information if you don't feel comfortable, although you have a right to ask. Just look at their name badge and under their star badge they will have a number. If they happen to hide that information for some reason then at that point you should ask.

In case anyone is wondering, I accidentally left the Guest account active on the forum. That is the reason why the users names are Guest.

I wish there was something we could do to organize a way where we can go to the grove after hours. I'm sure there is a way to obtain a permit from the town. I wonder if there is someone within the police department that we could talk too. It just seems unfair that because some teens go there to get wasted and vandalize should ruin it for us all. I happen to be really into the paranormal and I consider myself lucky to be close to something like bachelors grove, but it kills me to not enjoy it in a night setting. I've been there during the day, it just isn't the same.

While I have heard storys of cops going out into the woods looking for teens, I do not beleive it.  (Unless someone here wants to confirm this occurs?)

I do not see cops walking down the long path to get to the cemetary to tell people to leave.  As long as you get dropped off, I think you would be fine, not to mention no one will know you are in the area.

3 friends and I stayed the night in the cemetary last year, simply got dropped off by the entrance and walked inside, no one would have ever knew we were there, except when some other people showed up a few hours later and hung around trying to scare their friends.

From time to time they do go inside after dark. A lot of times they don't. But there are documented cases when they do go inside. I have seen the tickets and have even recorded the police radio traffic. When you get dropped off the way that you described your chances of getting caught are slim. Unless of course you decide to light a fire, then your odds of getting noticed go way up. That also goes for those who use a flashlight.

Yes, I have a few bonehead co-workers who visited the cemetery the night before Halloween and they were goofing around trying to scare each other when they were caught. All 5 of them were given court dates and all ended up paying $75.00 fines. So it does happen.

The park service owns that land these days and the town can't offer any permit help for you.  The police also cannot change the rules set for the land, they just enforce them. To get that land easier to access you would have to convince the state to allow it.

Three friends of mine (names will be withheld) went there during the night and got caught, but they didn't get arrested at all. All that happened was they got a stern talking to for being there late at night, and then they each had to pay a hundred dollar fine! And I'm sure that's not the last time they've gone either! I mean what's the big deal about going there anyway. Sure it's the most haunted place around, and just because us teens like to go there for a few scares doesn't mean we are going to vandalize the place like so many others. They have to lighten up a bit and let teens have a few laughs. I want to go there because they just told me what Bachelors Grove was a week ago. Before that I had no idea what it was. I never even heard of it and I've lived in the Chicago land area my entire life, with the exception of living in TN for part of the summer. But that doesn't matter at this point. I really am into paranormal stuff. I love the Ouija Board, in fact I did it the other night, but nothing extrodinary happened. I believe it was my friend moving the thing the whole time. Then, anyway, yeah, I want to be a parapsychologist someday! But that's my reply to this.

I work for one of the patroling police deptments is the area.  The problem local cops have is that the young kids who go to party back there are parking vehicles on side streets creating congestion and throwing trash on private property.  If our department is called out there for parking complaints, all vehicles not registering back the address they are in front of will get tickets.

We got a ticket for being at the grove after hours.  We had no problem with this, becasue it was a risk we were willing to take.  When the cop was giving us the ticket another cop pulls up and is being a complete asshole and disrespecting us.  When the officer that was harassing us starts to leave we ask for her badge number. she says what for. and we say we dont need a reason.  She then says you cant have it and drives off with no lights on, so seeing her plates becomes impossible.  We do have her name though because we got it from the cop that was giving us the ticket. what should we do about this?

The procedure at our department is to go to the station and file an officer complaint with the watch comander.  What department was the female officer from?

Do you know if there is any way to get a permit or an officer to go into the cemetary for about an hour or so with a small (1-5) group of people? Me and my friends are very interested in the paranormal and in this cemetary! We have decided we need to go 2 places before college starts in the fall: Bachelors Grove (day and hopefully night) and Mansfield Reformatory. Please let me know. You can email me at disordered_chaos@yahoo.com

I'M NOT SURE IF INDIVIDUALS CAN GET PERMISSION.  I KNOW FILM CREWS HAVE.  TRY EITHER THE COOK COUNTY SHERIFF'S POLICE OR THE COOK COUNTY FOREST PRESERVE POLICE.

dont worry. the cops wont go into the woods after dark. they just stand at the enterance off the turnpike and shine lights in wile calling out on the megaphone. plus, the woods are so big and dark that you can easily hide even if you are wearing all white.

Knowing a bit about the forest preserve district (grew up in Crestwood)  I would say, contact them and try to obtain a "Special Use Permit"  Be prepared to pay for it tho.  Those grounds don't pay their own taxes you know.  You will also probably have to be affiliated with a documented group to get the access permit.  None of this is for sure,  just my best guess based on past exp.

I just talked to a foolish friend of mine who went to the grove this weekend at night.  He said that they parked by another forest preserve and walked a few miles to the grove.  He did say that the police did chase him when they saw him and his friends, but they got away.  Unfortunately, the police found the car in the f.p. parking lot and towed it.  $150 later, they got the car back.

Well I just wanted to say I am new to the Forums and I loved what came of this site.

Anyway back to topic I been going to the cemetery since 94. Only once have the Cops came in and messed with us. Let me start from the beinging of this story.

It was in the middle of July right around midnight a couple of friends and I got together we brought 2 video cameras, Tape recorders, 3 cameras (2 normal and one with Infra-red Film). We decided to park on the other side of the woods where there was new construction and we hiked through the woods which tripped me out more than anything. To go through the woods in probly about a mile or so. So we got to the cemetery and started taking pics and video we were there probly about 1 hour.

All of a sudden 2 cops show up with there guns out pointed right at are heads. They started yelling at us to drop whatever we had and get on the ground. After about 30 mins of questioning us they saw all the equipment we brought and decided to let us go and made us walk the long way around the woods back to our car as they just drove next to us.
