Suggestions on Equipment
« on: October 11, 2006, 09:42:45 AM »
Me and a friend are planning to go to the grove to do a school project, and are wondering what would be the best items to take.  We aren't professional or anything, but so far what we are bringing is..

A VHS camcorder
A digital camcorder
A Digital Still camera
And possibly a Nikon camera(it's my friends, rather nice).

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I just realized this is probably in the wrong section.. sorry about that.

I would suggest voice recorder with an external mic, if ou have one.
DIM flashlights if your planning on going at night. Use them as little as possible though.
A film camera is essential. The photographs are much more reliable, theres no errors in pictures that digital cameras cause.
Long pants and jacket (kind of obvious in this weather) there is poison ivy there, ive gotten it.  It may be dead now though.

Umm, nothing else i can think of right now.  Where dark cloths, go really late if your going at night, and if you have any reason to believe someones coming, make sure you see them before they see you.

If you want to look into the paranormal aspects.. getting an electro-magnetic field detector might also be a cool piece to bring along. It's not essential to your project, but it might give it a ghost hunter feel that will mystify the school audience ;).

We went, and I'd like to thank everyone for the tips.  We did end up buying the recorder, and we had snacks in the car :D .  An EMF would have been really nice, but we didn't know where exactly to buy it(no time to ebay it.)

I'd love to go back. Only problem is i'm 15 (16 in january).  My friend drove down last time. I think i'll end up going some when i'm readily available to drive.  That'd be pretty cool to get a group of people from the forums to go.

lol I doubt it'd be a biggie.. I'd say I'd come pick you up, but I don't think parents would go for that.. but a forum field trip would be awesome :)

Yeah that would be awesome...let me know if a group trip is planned.  I live in the city so if someone needs a ride near me that wouldn't be a problem.

There is alot of people who seemed interested in a group event.  Many also in a possible documentary?  Maybe something could be arranged on a weekend of a grove cleanup day.  I'll send the video we are making for our class into the site once we finish.  (it's due on tuesday) :

Can't wait to see the video!  Also, that is a great idea about the clean up thing.  Plus, that would be a good way to advertise future clean ups, since viewers will be able to find out about it!

Yup! If a video was made around that time, it could have alot of great content.  Footage of the cleanup going on, interviews from people associated with the cleanup, hopefully some night footage for those willing to break da law ;).  A permit could be attainable, probably not from the CCFP office.  All you get is answering machines...  I'm pretty sure i'm set on joining the cleanup crew next year, so i hope maybe something could be put together!

A group event would be great, but i'd be very worried going there with more than four other people.  At night at least.  Your asking for trouble in big groups.

Your probably right.  It might be risky, but maybe do a thing with shifts of two or three.  Like one group is in filming from 11-12 another 1-2..  I'm thankful for being a minor.  A few of my friends are 18+ and they are freaked of going in at night just because of it going on their record.  Maybe if a documentary were going to be large enough, a permit could be obtained.

Me and my friends for our documentary(I'm hoping to put it on youtube soon) tried calling in for a permit.  We got Vito Benigno's number.  He is supposed to be the head of the recreation department, but he never answered any calls, nor returned any messages.

Our first one went pretty good.. Considering we had three days to edit it.  For what we accomplished, i'm very proud!  We are going to film another one, this time with better footage and pictures, and also, plenty of time to edit it out to something much more professional.

1337 may not be here with us anymore, due to a tragic...tragic death.  Although i am sure in some way, his sorry soul is watching this post. ;)

I'm sure he is still very excited about joining the GRP next year (although he is "dead"), and the possibility of another documentary.  Although his should be starting to get made in a couple weeks.  Just theoretically speaking of course!

I'm sure he is watching.... Let's just hope other people can be a little more civil with other users of the forum. It was actually a hard decision to make on my part.

I'm sure he would be rather sorry.  Maybe he was heckled on by a friend or something (not saying I know.)  So i'll make the apology for him to anyone offended, or in that matter, anyone who read what was wrote.  I'm sure he felt the punishment of death was reasonable, and would be willing to start over again... well, as a n00b.
